Massey 165 Generator

My generator on my diesel 165 has stopped working again. Agco shows the part number as Delco-Remy 1100436. The Massey part number is 193517M91.

Anyone know a good place to find a rebuilt/new one?

Does yours have the tachometer gear box attached to the back of the generator that drives
the tachometer?

If so rebuild it, this type generator, you must keep the fan belt fairly loose or you
will burn the rear bearing out.

If no tachometer gearbox, I would seriously consider changing over to a alternator and
be through with the generator problems.

Currently I do not know where I would get my generator repaired as most of the shops
have quit working on them.

Mines in the same boat on my 65. There are dozens of good tutorials on rebuilding/repairing gens on You Tube and elsewhere. Start there, that's what I'm doing. Bad bushes, mice too high, dirt and rust, all simple fixes that probably will bring it back to life. Gens are real simple. Once it's fixed go through the wiring and fix all the iffy stuff and make sure the connections are clean, polarize the gen and see if it doesn't work.

Mine does not have the tach drive on the back. I already have a new 1 wire alternator that I bought to convert it. I also bought a universal mounting kit. I could not figure out a bracket combination to get the alternator mounted. It was like a Chinese puzzle! Haha

If any one has pictures of the bracket setup for the 165, I would give it another shot.

There are a couple places a quick internet search turned up. Pretty sure NAPA still carries everything for them too.

I've put alts on several tractors, from JD 40C and DB990 to Case VAC/VAI and Fords. Line up the lower mounting bracket holes and use spacers to establish a firm mounting. You may have to shim the alt to the front or back so it lines up with the belt. Then see where the top adjustable mount ends up and shim that too till all is lined up. It's just a matter of cobbing things together until it fits.
