MF 205 torque converter transmission

I have restored the above c/w 710 front loader & rear backhoe. After having done over 50 hours work since then, the forward/reverse transmission no longer functions, ie. the tractor won't move at all. I am told there must be a malfunction in the torque converter. In order to access this component I will have to remove both backhoe & front loader to expose the bare tractor. I believe this component was supplied to MF UK from the USA. I live in the UK. Before I start tackling this repair it would be good to know if anyone out there has any related knowledge or experience. Can spare parts still be obtained?

Is this a 4 speed shuttle shift? There is a rod that runs up from the pedals to the torque convert (Right side) and articulates 90 degrees into the tranny, Should be a grease fitting. They freeze-up from weather exposure. Had to use visegrips/wd40 on my MF30E, then greased that fitting. Let us know how you make out

Before going too far, check the fluid level in the transmission. Our 205 with shuttle shift transmission and will stop moving when the fluid is low. It has a leak at the transmission input shaft behind the torque converter. Splitting the tractor is required to fix it. If your machine is like our 205, the large plug by the right footrest is where you add ATF fluid.

Thanks for reply
The linkage between the forward/reverse pedal & the internal workings is free albeit a little worn after all these years. The machine dates from 1969. I feel sure the problem is internal.

Hi Larry thanks for email. Ever since I had the tractor I have experienced a puzzling feature when checking the oil level as you describe. On removing the plug after the machine has stood, oil will come gushing out. A fitter who who worked on these when they were new tells me that this was always a problem caused by oil transfer from the main gearbox/rear axle when full to the top of the dipstick level, the cure!! being to keep this level at the lower end of said dipstick. However my experience is that the oil looks as though it might have transferred from the engine crankcase. The machine dates from 1969 & spent it's working life in Scotland, hence the name.

Does your machine have have gears or an automatic type transmission with high/low and foot pedals for forward & reverse? The auto type transmission has a torque converter and uses red automatic transmission fluid like automobiles. This is self contained from the rear axle gear oil and engine oil from what I remember when my 205 was apart. Your machine may have a foot clutch and gears with high/low range. A bad seal could allow oil to go where it"s not suppose to. I"m not sure why your machine won"t move. Hopefully another post will have other things to check. Maybe check for plugged filters if you do have a torque converter type transmission.

My great grandfather emigrated from Scotland to Nova Scotia Canada in the early 1900s then moved to the United States - Rochester, NY in 1920. Eventually they moved into farming and our family is still farming today. I plan to visit Scotland someday.

Many parts are still available from AGCO. I rebuilt the Perkins diesel for my 205 with parts from AGCO & this site. For the transmission check with a Massey Ferguson or AGCO dealership when you find the problem.

Since you say your linkage from the pedal is sloppy, maybe there's a chance it came undone inside? If really sloppy it may have been at it's extreme to operate the valve that controls forward/reverse. If you have a factory manual, it'll have some procedures for trouble shooting. In any event, it's quite likely you're in for a split. If and when you do, it would be good to redo all the bushings in the control linkage, which are only accessible during a split. Have you tried changing the filter? Maybe it's restricting the flow. On our MF40 (slightly newer version), the filter is up under the front left side of the dash panel. MK
