1974 Massey Ferguson 165

Hello all,
Haven't posted since I was working on the 202 Work Bull, which, thanks to all your help, is running great.
Have a new project possibly. A 1974 165 diesel. Owner says the 3pth will go up but not down. He has replaced some things under the top cover (he mentioned springs) and it worked for a bit, then quit again. Any ideas? I'm thinking a relief valve or along those lines. Am I thinking in the right direction?

Again, thanks for all the help...

Roger

We had a 175 that would go up as soon as you started it and it would not go down till you parked it. The roller on the linkage, inside the right cover had fallen out. We used baling wire to hold it all together till the new linkage came in.(1975)

Thanks ptfarmer and 504. Sorry it took so long to reply. I'm going to look at it Saturday, the owner sounds like a younger person because he didn't know what multi-power is, or what category the lift is. Any way, his asking price is well below the average for that tractor, so maybe I'll bring it home.

Thanks again for your replies and if I do bring it home, I'm sure I'll be asking some more questions...

My brother bought his 135, and it had that problem. A small spring popped off one of the levers under the cover, which also knocked a small lever out of place. We found the small spring laying on the bottom after we drained the oil.

Thanks for that info ptfarmer. Seems the owner told me that the lift worked for about a day after he rebuilt the top cover, then quit, could be the same problem. I'm going up in the morning to check it out, and will probably bring it home. He thinks he can find the repair manual for it, if not, I'll of course buy one. I'll still be looking for ya'lls help on this one as I did on the 202 Work Bull.

Thanks again,
Roger
