I have a Massey 235 that as problems with the
power steering. After reading on the internet seems
like they had lots of problems. Mine works when
there is fluid in it but it leaks out around the pump.
The black cover held on by the little screws on the
edge. Is there a seal in there that might have blew
out. The pump looks fairly new. How do I remove
the pump?

Hi,
These pumps can be a problem. There is a paper gasket between the rear face of the timing cover and the pump. The pump is secured by the two bolts arranged vertically which pass through the timing cover and are screwed into the pump body. You will require a 9/16AF spanner to release them. It is possible that the gasket has failed but this is normally due to the seal leaking. This could be due to the seal having gone hard and split or wear in the pump bushings allowing the spindle to wander as it revolves. If the pump has been over-hauled it is possible that the seal has been fitted incorrectly. Is there any evidence of the engine oil level increasing? The level in the pump will go down accordingly. Be very careful if you remove the pump cover. There is an O ring inside. The cover is very flexible and it is very easy to distort it during removal or refitment.

No the oil legal has not been rising. So if I take the cover off the pump I might just need to change the seal? But watch out for the o ring
