MF3165 Perkins AD4.203 cleaning and rehab

Hello,

Sorry for posting this twice. I originally posted in the Restoration and Repair section, without receiving replies.

I'm relatively new to tractors and hope that someone can provide advice. I purchased a fixer upper Massey Ferguson MF 3165 with the 203 Perkins diesel., and am in the process of getting her going. When I looked at the air filter, it was filthy. The air cleaner and air inlet hose were filthy too. When I felt inside the intake manifold, it was coated with grime. I've removed the manifold to clean it. I'm soaking it in Pine-Sol and will scrub with a brush.

[b:11f5596366]How do I clean the air intake on the cylinder head?[/b:11f5596366] I'm afraid that I'll push some loose gunk into the engine. I'd rather not pull the motor apart any further if I don't have too. But after seeing how dirty everything is, do you think it would be a good idea?

Thanks in advance!

You could use a shop vac while you are cleaning the intake ports, make sure the intake valve is closed when cleaning. With all that grit I'd do a compression test, a dry test, and wet test see if there is any difference.

Thanks for the advice. I think it worked well. I stuffed a paper towel in each intake port, then used pine sol to
loosen the grime up. Kept the shop vac going to suck the fluid out.

I didn't close the intake valve. How do you do that? I'm guessing rotate the engine somehow.

(quoted from post at 16:00:36 07/26/15) Just rotate the engine until the valve closes.

It looks like the radiator needs to be removed in order to rotate the engine. Is that right?

Do you know what size socket?

Thank you for your help.
