Working up high

Any tricks to overcome being uneasy while working up high. I have never liked heights but tolerated it when younger. I am now 56 and today totally froze on top of a bin. I work by myself and it took me over an hour to gain my balance and courage to get down the ladder. I have noticed that my balance has gotten worse through the years even on step ladders. I wish now I had designed some type of in ground grain storage. It is starting to be a real problem for me to complete my jobs. Any tips or tricks?

Nope, no tricks, you're a wise man. In my youth I could climb across a 12:12 roof, walk the ridges, didn't bother me at all. Old guy now, I get really scared up high. Perfectly normal, I think. Can be old, or can be bold, but can't be old and bold.

I don't have any tips other than to tell you it won't get better. I just turned 70 and I try to stay on the ground as much as possible. My balance and sure footedness leaves a lot to be desired. Just have to extra careful with everything I do now.

Reminds me of when I was flying and my flight instructor told me " there old pilots and there are bold pilots but there are no old bold pilots".

Vertigo. Can happen at any age, but the odds increase as you haven't already died young. It is a normal brain's job to make the body die of old age..
And has mentioned below, a kid would? say? go up there and jump around like a monkey? sure! This is cool!
As a wiser middle aged fellow, the the brain asks the middle ear and arms, legs... 'what the 4$%^ you think you're doing up here????'
This is why an army wants and needs an 18 year old to charge up a hill with a bayonet... a 35 year old brain would say ' give me a 4 power scope, let me hide behind this big thick tree, and I can take him out from way back here'....

Some things just need to be hired done. That would be my best advise to you. I have climb and worked on radio towers and use to be a lineman climbing poles in my younger years. Ill be 60 this year and still height doesn't bother me but Im sure slower and more deliberate with every move. But mostly I let the younger men climb. They bounce a lot better then us old farts. Two other things, there are also relatively new OSHA rules about working over 5 or 6 feet high and your insurance company might not cover you if you fall.
