MF 180 hi/lo range shift lever problem

I have mf180 with Perkins diesel and 12 speed multi-power transmission. I have problem with hi-low gear range shift lever. (The muti shift lever works ok) But I lost the low end gears after I tried to pull start tractor even knowing that it would not work that way. The hi-low selector lever has to be held in place in hi range or it pops out of gear. Seems that it will not travel far enough to shift into low gear range. I would think mostly that it would be a linkage adjustment. But I see no EZ way to get to linkage.
Thanks, Ohiopioneer

Try This: With multi power lever all the way up, follow down to top of trans. Loosen
the little clamp that is on a small peg and tap the peg down while holding the clamp
up and then retighten. Be sure the clamp does not stick to the peg and slides upward
as the peg goes down. Chuck

What you describe I've seen before, the Hi-Lo range planetary gear set has the pressed in Lo range gear coming out of the carrier. It keeps the shift sleeve from moving forward enough to couple on the main shaft for Hi, and Lo is lost as the sleeve moves rearward as normal, but the internal gear has moved back out of place so it can't mesh with the sleeve outer teeth. It can be fixed by removing the lift cover and removing the planetary assembly, press the gear back in place, peen it more like the factory did, then spot weld it in a few places. That's what I've done in the past anyway..

Your solution sounds very plausible. So now I ask, after getting cover removed to conduct your repair, can I service the planetary gears with out splitting the tractor? My service manual claims that I at least need to split between the differential housing and transmission.

It's been awhile since I've had a 180 lift cover off, if the planetary can't be removed it would probably be because of the auxiliary pump drive assembly. At the very least you would be able to use a heavy punch to put the gear back in place, and peen around the outer edge more like the factory did. The last gear I had loose was on a 203 model forklift, but it had no hydraulic pumps inside.
