Massey Harris 55 diesel

Just wondering how difficult and time consuming splitting a 55 is? Might have to dismantle one for transport and thought about front axle off the engine seperated from rear end. Any thoughts welcome. I have split tractors before but not a 55 and of course there is no substitute for the experiences of others. I would have access to another tractor with loader.

Had a few 55's apart--not too hard. The clutch shaft from the engine is connected to the input shaft of the trans by means of a chain coupler or a rubber cushioned coupler on later models. Undo the coupler and any related lines for fuel linkages etc.unbolt the engine and it lifts right out. Front axle has a trunnion that is bolted to the underside of the frame; easier to remove this than trying to drive the pin out, unless things are so worn it just slides out; axle brace is removed by 4 bolts under the tub. The 'tub' which holds the engine is bolted to the trans housing and will pull away when the bolts are removed. Fuel tank, belt pulley/pto gearbox, steering box, pedals, etc. go with the back half; front axle, tub, rad, clutch and bell housing and drag link for steering go with the front half. How long it takes is very dependant on the amount of rust and seized bolts there are. I'm sure you know to block the axle to keep the front from tipping...Be Careful!
