Perkins 4.236 diesel

Thrust washers crapped out on me and ruined my block and crank. The engine shop said too much clutch pressure is the problem. Will any perkins 4.236 diesel from say a bobcat or whatever bolt up to a MF180? Thanks for your input.

Now that's interesting... be like pulling your self up by the boot straps eh? Did the fellow that told you this rebuild that engine lately? or???
The clutch is bolted to the flywheel, and its springs affect nothing else, the splines from the tranny put no pressure on anything... so this explanation is awfully hard to even visualize... I suppose with more Canadian beer it would make perfectly good sense...

An improperly set clutch free play or operator riding the clutch constantly could cause the rear thrust washer to wear and fall out of place, although not common. Did have a A4.203 Perkins do the same thing years ago. Once one set comes out of place it's not long before crank and block are damaged. There may be thicker washers available if block and crank are not too bad..

the crank thrust bearing is what counteracts the force applied to the pressure plate by the release bearing not normally a problem, seen a fresh rebuilt 135 engine destroy the thrust bearing after start up because of being drawn together with the bell housing bolts and the 2 stage clutch splines weren't meshed up also destroyed the clutch

Don't know what machine shop facilities are available to you but I had a 180 with the same problem and found a local shop that welded up and ground the crank ,and faced off the bearing cap, put a thicker thrust bearing on the cap and it worked fine. He was the only around here that would do it and it was his specialty. He did many that way. He had it down to a science. Unfortunately 2 weeks later he passed away

He called around and tried to find a shop to build it up. He said it was too bad. When we tore it down, we found that it had been rebuilt. Four of the valves had been replaced. The locater screw in the rocker arm assembly was laying in the head. Still a good tractor and I am going to repair it. Thanks for your input.

4.236 Crankshaft. AGCO/MF part number 736829M91 (crankshaft kit). Crankshaft 836829M91. Perkins part number 84422. I've seen them anywhere from $300.00 - $600.00

I put 200 hours or so after I bought it so I don't think that is the problem. One of the reply posts mentions freeplay on the clutch pedal. When I bought the tractor the battery box wasn't secure and the clutch mechanism is attached to it. I welded the battery box to the frame but didn't adjust the clutch. A terrible lesson learned the hard way. I purchased a repair manual after the motor messed up so now I know how to get it right this time. Thanks for your input.

I agree that freeplay on the clutch pedal. When I bought the tractor the battery box wasn't secure and the clutch mechanism is attached to it. No, bought it from small town tractor repair shop in Alabama and the machine shop is in Mississippi. I believe that there was not enough freeplay and every time I pressed the clutch in that the massive pressure plate was pushing the entire assembly towards the motor. The battery box was loose and since the clutch is attached to it then it was working ok until I welded the battery box to the frame. I didn't know about the freeplay adjustment and the result is a big mess. (Any kind of beer makes a bad situation worse.)
