Power Steering Pumps

Hi can anybody tell me if the 2 power steering pumps 1884357M91 and 523089M91 are possibly the same pump but different gears on the front? But ultimately what id like to know is do they both spin the same direction regardless. Really need a solid answer to this. Cheers, Cam.

MF65.... Long story cut short i ordered a S60861 from Sparex and on the box it had 3 part numbers the standard Sparex number plus also those other 2 Massey numbers in my first post. I have attached pictures to show what i ended up with... The pump came with a 14 tooth gear so i ordered a 13 tooth direct from Massey as the pump appeared to bolt on and does bolt on correctly however I'm not sure it spins the correct direction as i don't get any pressure out of the pump. Ive had a pressure gauge on this to confirm... It does however appear to pressurise the tank being the back end of the pump has pushed backwards and popped the oring seal. Thinking i clearly don't have the correct pump to do the job... Thinking this is a Sparex fault possibly?

All ideas considered...

Hi Cam,
Although both pumps mount on the left hand side of their appropriate engines, the 1884357M91 pump would have a much lower relief valve setting than the 523089M91 pump, because it operating on a power assisted system.
The 285/1080 and 1085's are all full hydrostatic systems. This means that the labelling on the packaging is conflicting, I believe.

This doesn't mean to say that a pump with the higher relief setting couldn't be used on the power assisted saystem though.

Easiest way to determine if the required pump rotation is correct would be to remove the pump, rotate the engine in the direction of rotation, and check wich way the driving gear in the timing case is turning.

Equate this to your pump, and rotate the driven gear on the pump as it would be turned, if fitted to the engine.

With oil in the reservoir and your finger over the supply fitting, you should be able to "feel" oil build-up under your finger or a vacuum.

This will tell you if your supplier has sent you the incorrect pump, I believe.

Hey thanks for info i have confirmed the drive gear in the housing will spin my gear on the pump in an anti clockwise direction... Can you confirm which outlet is the supply? (top or bottom fitting) also as i don't have the original steel lines I'm using hydraulic hose instead its not massive hose but possibly not the skinniest or shortest it could be will this make any difference to my required pressures?

Also just from a few tests yesterday I had both hoses from the pump going into a bucket ... next to no oil was being pumped but one was blowing and one was sucking i didn't try sitting the sucking one into oil tho. When connected to my steering valve with a pressure gauge inline i still get no pressure tho. Could something be stuck in my steer valve? This is brand new.

The oil supply or outlet fitting is the one centrally located on the pump assembly. Your return fitting is located in the rear end housing of the pump assembly, adjacent to the reservoir.
