Hey can anybody tell me if the hydraulics are upto spec on a mf65 to use a 3pl log splitter if so what sort of specs do I need to fall into size (tonnes) and lpm wise... My tractors hydraulics are in good health but don't wont get something that wont do the job...

Any assistance would be great.

Cheers.

The MF hydraulic pump is something like 4 gpm (15 lpm). Don't know what kind of logs you are splitting, but here in Texas its mesquite mainly. Mesquite can be slow splitting especially if it has knot(s) in it. So how many tons depends upon what type of log. Mesquite can sometimes take a lot of tons, on occasion it can even stop the splitter.

I have an 8 hp Briggs and Stratton engine running my 26 ton splitter, make is Brave,
unit is set up on a small towable trailer.

Mine lays flat, close to the ground, New ones can flip up.

The advantage of a separate unit, it affords you the opportunity to use your tractor to
pull up more logs, haul away split wood. Any support job you you might need the tractor for.

Also the small engine uses much less fuel, you will have to run up the rpm's on your
small tractor using much more fuel.

Just my opinion: I have had my splitter since 1985 and with good maintenance, it still
runs good. It has busted many ricks of wood over the years.

Your problem may be your tractors lack of gallons of oil per minute, volume, you may have the pressure, but your ram will be slow, so your cycle rate will be slow.

What makes the small splitters like mine work, the hydraulic oil pumps move high volumes of oil at low pressure to get the ram out to the wood fast, then when the ram engages the wood and the pressure increases, the pump shift to low volume high pressure mode.
Your tractor pump can not do this on a small tractor.

Just check it out!

I ran one with a 231 Massey and I don't think it has as much GPM as your 65 has. It was slow but for an older guy such as myself I was happy with it. Having one on your tractor is one less engine to have to deal with. I don't think my small Diesels burn much less fuel sitting their not working hard than the small gas engines I have used. Not to mention my tractors are ran year round and are always ready to go. I keep off road fuel in an upright tank so I don't have to mess around getting gas. It works best for me.
