More 3165 Questions

Hi All,
I have been repairing a 3165s Loader in recent months.
I bought it not going, possibly in need of clutch repair.
I renewed dual clutch & ,with tractor still split, noticed that I could turn the trans mainshaft very easily from front of gearbox...with no resistance.(gear engaged)

I had noticed earlier that the H-S-L RANGE lever was very hard to move.Today I removed the lid for a look. All gears look OK,& I could easily move the 2 gear rails thru their range. The RANGE rail seems locked in "L" position.I believe this gearbox has a Planetary gearset behind the gearbox.

I have 2 questions:
1/Why can I turn the mainshaft with no resistance..should it not be under load ( wheels & are on the ground)?
2/Is there a "usual suspect" regarding my locked up RANGE lever.?

I'm not familiar with this type of gearbox,so I hope I'm making sense.

Thanks again for your ideas..

Trans in any gear, main shaft will turn fairly easy when hi-lo-start is in start position. Rear end should move when in hi or lo, if not drive is lost to the ring gear. Could be the safety fuse coupling is sheared, or cotter pin has come out allowing coupling to move forward from the pinion shaft. I'd remove the left diff case side cover and look inside.

Thanks DieselTech,
I guess that's a good way to get to know my machine.
I had been wondering what it looks like in the rear end.
There is definately a disconnect,so I'm hoping it's not too bad.

I'm happy to persist,as the tractor looks well made & will be handy for years. The engine sounds good.
Eventually,I'll make up a blade,fork,bucket & crane attachment.
Initially,I figured the 3165 was like a 165...but I get the feeling it is built a little heavier.

The hi-lo planetary at the trans rear may also have the internal pressed in gear out of place too as I've seen it happen before. The shift collar moves forward for hi to mesh with the mainshaft, and moves reward for lo and mesh with the internal gear. When the gear comes out of place about 3/8 inch hi will not mesh, and usually lo will not either. Last one I fixed by pressing it back in place, re-peening like the factory did, and then spot welding too.

Thanks again DT,
I have a chance to buy an OEM manual,so I'll get it & have a look thru it.
Do I need any special gear during pulldown?
I have a big vice,a 30T press,jacks & two good hammers...plus all the usual spanners,levers & tools.
I guess my starting point is that left side cover..

Finally got some time to look at the H-S-L selector today.Removed the seat & rear trans cover .It's good to be able to see the whole lot...gears,shafts,etc.
I drained the oil & there was a thick, yellow treacle left at the base of the trans case.

I think I'll re-fit the gearbox lid & see what's happening with the selection issue.I could get all 3 ranges to select, but had to fumble around a bit .I think re-fitting the lid will help a lot..

I noticed the front of the mainshaft (near clutch) is a bit sloppy,so I'll add new bearings there.
I'll inspect the diff gears too.

Are there any things I need to check while I'm in here?
Once I get the selector sorted out,I'll fit the new clutch.

Thanks again for your help.
