I have a MF 50 do not know the year, I bought it in 1999 the engine had a stuck valve after I ran it for a while it loosened up and then it ran ok for the last 15 years. It only had approximately 75 pounds of compression so I decided to rebuild this past winter. It did okay after the rebuild for a while a couple of weeks ago I was mowing some deep grass then it popped three or four times died then it would not start. I checked compression 100 pounds showed on the gauge. looking in the spark plug hole there was what looked like glue, turned out to be antifreeze. pulled the head dropped the pan, sent the head back to the machinist to check it out. looking around the sleeves I noticed that the top of the sleeves moved around and bubbles came out. I talked to the machinist (he is the one who pressed them in) said that the gasket would hold it once the head was clamped down that may be true but I don't believe that the sleeves should move and didn't I do that already when put the head on. Is there someone out there that point me in the right direction. Thanks

The wet sleeves do not fit tight at the block top counterbore area, and yes the head gasket does seal the top of the sleeve when the head is torqued in place. Was the head retorqued with the engine hot? If not that could be why you sprung a leak again.

The engine was cold with all new sleeves pistons, crank was turned, new crank and rod bearings, this is a Z134 gas engine.
The machinist said it was a dry sleeve engine. I heard that you can use green lock tight to seal the top side of the sleeves. any info would be appreciated.

that's what thought it was until the machinist said it was not, I don't think I will be sending him any business. I think I will use the green lock tight around the top edge to seal it when it goes back together and look for another machinist. Ill keep you posted.

If engine was turned over with the head off the motion of the pistons will dislodge the orings on bottom of sleeves and may not re seat.

(quoted from post at 05:30:51 06/03/15) If engine was turned over with the head off the motion of the pistons will dislodge the orings on bottom of sleeves and may not re seat.
I only turned it by hand and they still appear to be at the same height just above the block.
