MF 165 hydraulics diverter valve

the hydraulic diverter valve is leaking at the push pin. It is the simple "open - close" type, probably original equip made in England, although my 165 is Detroit US made circa 1969. This diverter has always bothered me anyways as the pin gets hit by my foot when I leave tractor seat and accidentally switches on or off during hay work when I need external hydraulics. So, before I order a new one was wondering if there are any words of wisdom for folks that have replaced these before and advice. Is there a drop tube that is a pain, or special O-rings, etc. I need to also buy? Thanks in advance Gents. Finn

There are many diverter valves available for MF tractors. The one I bought has three ports for Aux functions. I will try to attach photo.

As to stand pipe and seals, when you pull the diverter valve the stand pipe may come up with it. There is a small o-ring and backup washer on both ends. Some tractors stand pipes had a square block welded into it for pressure control. If yours doesn't come out, the side inspection cover will have to come off, (after pulling the bottoms bolts to drain oil to cover level).

On Ebay, they are calling them "Selector valves" also. Funny this guy is using the picture of MY tractor in his add.

Hi Tom, a very neat set-up. Further to the question; The Push-Pull single port type of selector valve are undoubtedly the cheapest and are a real pain when it comes to hitting them accidentally when getting on or off. In the past I have made simple brackets usually attached to one or two of the front cover bolts which shield the spool knob from being hit. Very effective and a lot safer.

Tom, I hate to be stupid but I have an old MF65 that has a valve on top if the hydraulics (sort of under the seat).

How is this used? What can it do? Is it to operate a single one way hydraulic cylinder like a haybine lift? Thanks, it is a new one for me.

First, that valve is called a diverter or selector valve. With that said, it diverts oil from the 3-point system to external components. You will have oil pressure to either the 3-point or external components, not BOTH at the same time.

To provide oil pressure to external components, place the 3-point where you want it, then shift diverter valve, then move 3-point lever towards constant pumping to provide oil pressure. If you have a load on the 3-point it may drift downward if the piston rings in the lift cylinder are faulty. The oil in the lift system is trapped and if the system is in good shape it should hold for a long time.

I use the diverter valve (thru a 4-way closed center directional valve) to operate a Top-Link cylinder when using my box or scraper blades. Sure saves a lot of cranking on the Top-Link.

You can also use the diverter valve for a one way cylinder without a directional valve.

I do hope this makes some sense to you.

Hi David, My cousin and I are dreaming of a trip to Wales. Our family came to USA in 1866 and I can only come up with records back to 1832. You told me a few years ago our Sirname (Jenkins) is as common as (Smith) here in the U.S.

Tom, Thanks let me ask a hypothetical question. If I was pulling an implement on the drawbar, like a dump trailer with a one hose hydraulic connection, would the diverter valve fill the cylinder and dump the trailer, then the weight of the bed would lower the bed when released? No need for the lift arms with a pull implement. Have I got it right and how would the cylinder be activated...with the lift arm lever? Many thanks

Yes, that would work. To dump your trailer;

1 With lift arms down, engage the diverter valve.
2 Move the lift lever towards the up position, the arms will not raise. the further you move lever towards full up or constant pumping will increase the PSI to the dump cylinder.
3 To lower cylinder/bed, return the lift lever to the down position. Note; there must be enough trailer bed weight to overcome any resistance in pivot/linkage arrangement for bed to lower.
4 Return diverter valve to off position to use 3-point.

I've NOT used mine for a single action cylinder, so someone may correct any errors in operation :)

Hi Tom,
Yes, I remember. With the internet now it has never been easier to look into family history. Much info can be gained by cross-referencing the free sites. If you can send me any info that you have I'd be happy to do a superficial search.

Many thanks. I grew up in the era of tractors without hydraulics. This is a bonus option on my old MF65.
I do use the hydraulics on my 2002 JD but did not expect any on the old MF65. Wow a new toy!

Tom,

I have a 2001 Massey Ferguson 231S with a Bush Hog front end loader and right now have a selector valve like this:

http://www.tractorbynet.com/forums/hydraulics/328688-massey-ferguson-250-remote-hydraulics.html

Its leaking and does not work well. Plus I have to have the three point lifted and in the right position to then switch over the the FEL hydraulics. If I go with the selector valve you have in the picture, if I understand correctly, I can leave it in position and use either three point or FEL without having to switch? And it has an Auxiliary so if I want to add rear hydraulics later I could?

Can you confirm? I know there would probably be some tubing mods to make. Sure hops this is the case cause the way it is set up now has me about ready to sell the tractor....

Thanks
