Poor running Perkins

I have an old M F 20 industrial tractor with a Perkins 3 cyl. Gas engin. I have replaced the plugs,points,condenser,cap,coil,alternator, and had the carb rebuilt. The tractor starts great but backfires through the carb very badly. Misses out when put in gear. Are there any suggestions?

A lean condition will cause a backfire. A burnt valve will do the same. I would start with a compression test to eliminate that problem. All cylinders should be within 10% of each other.
Then check to see that your points are gapped properly and adjust if needed.
After that, start adjusting fuel mixrures.

Check the valve clearance.

I would bet on a lean condition or bad valve, but make sure you have a good solid spark at the plugs first.

Was this running OK till the tune up? If not, tinker with the timing, even by ear.
