F40 electrical problem

When the F40 engine started the starter motor kept spinning.

When the key was turned off the starter motor kept spinning.

To stop the starter motor I had to disconnect the battery ground.

When the battery ground wire is touched to the battery terminal the starter motor engages.

What do you think the problem is?

It could be a couple of things. The push button used to start the tractor could be stuck. Unhook one of the wires on it to determine if it is the problem. The other possibility is the wires for the push button are shorted together providing continuous current to the solenoid.

this F40 has a key with an ignition switch rather than a push button. I'll try disconnecting one of the wires to the ignition switch and see what happens
