Need help with MF 65 power steering problems

I just bought a MF65 with a front end loader and back hoe. The power steering does not work. Some prior owner took the original power steering pump off and covered the hole with a plate, then added a bracket on the right side for a power steering pump that is belt driven and looks like it came off an older car or pickup. Does anyone know if this is actually a good solution? Does the automotive pump deliver enough pressure to run the power steering? I removed the plate covering the original opening for the pump and discovered that one tooth on the idler gear that drives the pump is about half missing. What is the best way to proceed keeping in mind that I am somewhat limited by time and financial resources? Thanks.

Hello Stan -

I used a belt driven car PS pump on a fork lift steering setup that I cobbled up back in the '70's. Used a 1 1/2 by 8 hydraulic cylinder, and the pump gave me lots of power and action. And it's still working!

I think the 65 cyl is about 2" dia, so you should have even more force if your pump works ok. I think those ps pumps put out a couple of gal/minute, at 1000 - 1200 psi.

Thanks Jack. Sounds like a good solution then. However, I have already ordered an original type pump for the MF. Do you think I'll be alright to use the damaged idler gear? It looks like a pretty tough job to replace it.

If it were mine, I'd pop the front end and replace the gear. Not a difficult job, but that front casting is heavy!

It will be hard to tell if the remaining tooth is solid, and I'd always be thinking it could flake off at some point and chew up more of the internals in the process - including the new pump gear.

I agree and am looking around for some used replacement gears. The biggest problem I'm going to have is the fact that there is a backhoe and loader mounted on the tractor which will make access verydifficult. I'm wondering if I might be able to remove the hood, side panels, fuel tank and radiator and have enough room to do the job?
