MF65 Planetary bearing R&R***Tools***Parts Availability*

I am more than likely going to be diving into the brakes and planetary on my mf65. I would like to know what service manual I need to do this properly and also if there are special tools needed, or can I get by with standard tools. will the bearings need to be pulled (slide hammer or puller)? Or will they slide off (probably not likely). And where can I get parts, are the bearings available through a bearing house or dealer only? Also what can I expect to find when getting into this? The right rear rim seems to bind when first backing up, it will release itself, but then about every few seconds it sounds like the housing is being struck with a hammer, not incredibly loud but very audible.

The only bearings that will give you a hard time are in the
planetary. If the problem is in there it should be quite obvious
when you take it apart. Hopefully its just in your brakes. I
built a press from 6×6s two tractor drawbars dome log chain and a
bottle jack. It was pretty spooky. The next one I took to the
dealer. I think it cost me 180 with parts. The brakes are pretty
straightforward but the axle trumpets are heavy. You will want a
hoist or lots help. The IT manual leaves a lot to be desired. I
did one side of mine at a time to help keep things together in
the rearend. Parts are available. I'm sure I've missed something
so keep us posted.

I might have some pics in the archives. This is where my phone picks up last April. Going this deep is how they end up painted.

Enjoy your post, funny I was thinking if I tear into it that far I will have a clear shot of painting it then in read your post. I'm not much for searching the archives bit I'll try. I appreciate the heads up. $180, was that for the brakes or for the planetary? That seems very reasonable.

Are there any tell tale signs that would point to only brakes or planetary? Seems I read somewhere that planetary will give a banging sound. Not sure what the banging sound would sound like, but mine sounds like as it rotates in reverse metal dropping on metal.

My brother had the local MF dealer put the planetaries back together on his 150 since they had the special tools needed to do it. When I asked him what they charged he said he didn't want to talk about it. The all needles for the needle bearings for the planetaries were sold individually (don't know if it's still that way, or not).

I don't know how many needles there are, but I read a post on here somewhere that said it was individual needles and .30 each. And I think that was in 2001.
I may just have a private little reputable local shop do my brakes for me and the other if needed (I hope not!).
I'll keep you informed, thanks again for your reply.

Something like 116 needles per side, then of course you need the pins, and other parts. My brother redid the planetaries, and brakes back in 1985, he changes the oil in the planetaries once a year since then (checking for any metal particles). He hasn't had any problems with the plantaries, and brakes since, plus he stays off the brakes as much as possible.

I checked with a local tractor shop, not a dealer and not the private shop I had mentioned. They told me I'm looking at around $300 for brakes alone one side. Does this sound out of line in this day and age?

(quoted from post at 20:38:40 05/13/15) Seems steep to me. But I did do mine myself.
I've never done them myself. Although I am pretty mechanically inclined. I'm not sure if I would have all the necessary tools for the job either. I'm still thinking about this one. But, hey great input from all of you guys and I appreciate it.
