44 Special bearing

There is a grease zerk sitting on top of the drive shaft where it exits the back of the engine. When grease is pumped in, most of it escapes from the bottom of the zerk. Is it cracked/defective or has it been designed that way to prevent over-greasing the bearing?

That's too much. Manual says 1 stroke of general purpose grease every 300 hours.
