I am buying a 101 jr the tag to identify it is gone are there any other locations where there might be stamped numbers. also this tractor runs the metal is in good shape what do you think it is worth.
 
Most Massey's from that era had the serial number stamped into the top of the transmission/differential case (into the upper machined surface to which the shifting platform bolts). Get out some sandpaper and a wire brush and go hunting to the left side near where the clutch pedal sits at rest, it will be in there for sure. Probably filled with paint and chicken poop and a myriad of other compounds. It's hand stamped and not done too deeply but the numbers are relatively large, let us know how you make out ....
 
I did'nt get it to my house yet but i soon as i do i will check those places and let you know. I'm paying 400.00 for it everyone is telling me it's worth alot more then that because of it's condition.
 
If it runs and has all the sheet metal it is definitely worth that, tires also big factor but running and sheet metal sure enough worth that
much alone!!!
 
so i got the tractor home I found the numbers they are 398191 the site i was on has the first three digits 398 but the other three numbers are not the same but the 398 is telling me it's a 1943 but that might not be correct.
 
Yours must be a narrow front rowcrop, both of mine were standard wide fronts. My serial number list for rowcrops (the standard front numbers are different)says 1943 rowcrops run from 398596 to some unknown number (see the next sentence). Funny that 1944 looks like they started numbering them from fresh (for whatever reason) with 500001 as the starting point. So your number 398191 looks like it would be a 1942 since it falls into the '42 range of 397637 to 398595. Anyways, this is what I have here from the "Wild Harvest" magazine Massey Harris publication, not sure if it is still being printed.
