Massey Harris 44 Transmission Work

I need to change the gears in my 44 Massey and have no idea of what the best way is to get the top shaft out without cutting the front bearing. I have really nice set of gears I found in the scrap yard. I got the top shaft out with a cordless saws all by cutting the cast iron case down each side of the bearing. Having never taken a massey tranny apart (testimony to their design) it looks like a challenge. I can split the tractor real easy. Support the front end with a splitting stand, support the fuel tank with blocks, hold up the steering wheel with the hoist, and roll the transmission out from under them. It is the front bearing on the top shaft that has me scratching my head wondering what the best way is. Thank You in advance for your help.

Do yourself a huge favor and get an I&T manual. They are straightforward and thorough and will help you understand the necessary steps to take. Give Terry Kessel a call at (71seven)6seven7-735zero, he should be able to get one to you. Good luck.

It has been a couple of years since I did this, so here goes. I pulled the top cover and the pto shaft. The hardest part is getting the cotter pin out of the nut that holds the bearing in. You can then put a socket and LONG extension in and take the nut off.
