175 Diesel starter stays on while tractor is running

I have redone the wiring on my 175 Diesel. I had my 1 wire alternator rebuilt. Anyway, I got it all hooked back up, and th
e starter wants to run at the same time as tractor. In other words, it wont shut off after the tractor is up and running and alternator charging the system. Any thoughts about what I should do. I dont want to burn up my starter.

Simple things first. Is the small solenoid wire touching the
battery wire. I had one do that when I put the batt in it it
started and drove through the garage door.

The solenoid, or start drive could be sticking. If it just started doing it after the rewire sounds like you may have some electrical feed back that keeps supplying power to the solenoid.

follow others advice 1st... this probably is not your problem ok ,,. but stranger things can happen ,, neighbors Hesston liked doing that ,,. turned out the crankshaft thrust bearing was loose because a swedge or sunmthin backed out ,, the crank would wobble back and forth a fourth inch , requiring a overhaul ,, made the pto clutch goofy too .. solenoids can play trix too ,, we switch d my 4020 over to 12 volt ,, for some reason it would start itself without anyone around ,, took off the solenoid and now it is fine

have not had a chance to look at it yet. I added a 3 position key switch to the system. So when I go from the "on" position to the spring loaded " start" position . The tractor starts fine, but I have to turn the key back to off to make the starter stop. It should stop turning when I let go of the key and the spring brings it back to the on position. I think....

That might be your problem. On our 285 the key only has the start position and returns to the off position when you let go. The gauges work off an oil pressure switch so once the oil pressure builds the gauges all come on. Mayabe able to switch some wires around on the switch to make it work properly.

I agree with Don-WI, you only need a two position switch. BTW, you don't really need a key to start that Perkins, a shiny screwdriver across the solenoid terminals and it will start (check in neutral with H-S-L lever in S). Throw that switch out and recheck your wiring, if it keeps happening then your solenoid may be sticking, as mentioned earlier.

Yup, I know it will work without a key switch. Its not very safe though. I think it is in the wiring of the switch. I beleive it is a back charge from the alternator through the switch.

I agree with MF#1. You only need a two position switch with a return spring to return it to the first position when key is released. Buy a replacement switch made for the tractor part #504809M91. These are readily available from aftermarket companies as well as on ebay for about $20.00 and this should fix your problem. By the way, current should be supplied to the alternator from the oil pressure switch that is located in a tee between the oil pressure gauge and the engine oil pressure line. This will close when oil pressure is pumped up after the engine starts and supply electric current to the alternator and the gauges if wired correctly. When you stop the engine and oil pressure drops, current is automatically shut off to the alternator and the gauges.
