Ferguson 65 or JD 2010? Which would you choose?

Ok. Not wanting to start any fights but wanted some feedback on what you felt would be a better choice for hay and mowing:
Ferguson 65 gas model or John Deer 2010 diesel? Found two good tractor candidates and wanted some feedback out there on which might be better and will need to add hydraulic remotes to both. plans include on pulling both round and square baler. potential to add FEL as well.

The John Deere 2010 is easily considered the worst tractor John Deere ever made. Many consider it right up there with the worst tractor any mfg ever made.

Gas or diesel go with the Massey 65 if those are your only 2 choices as the Massey is a solid and well repected tractor in that size and era.

The 2010 JD is the worst JD of all time (you couldn't give me a JD of any model). A neighbor had a Ford 8000 diesel tractor, he traded it in for a JD with the same hp as the Ford 8000. Asked him what's the biggest difference, he said the JD does the same work in the same amount of time, but the JD uses twice as much diesel. The 65 is a better deal.

Dont know jd, but make sure you have power steering (had to add to mine). If you want front loader, earlier models, you couldnt add a front mount hydraulic pump because of the tie rod gets in the way when turning. Mine i had to put a pto pump which ties up pto.

thanks for the replies.

what are the main issues with the JD 2010 and what defects might have made it the worst JD model?

If the 65 was diesel I might already have bought it.

The 2010 was a popular model where I grew up. It was rated at 46 engine HP while the 65 was rated at 46 pto HP with a lot more torque. The 65 will out perform the 2010. The 2010 utility also had a reputation for being nose heavy, not much good in mud. The 2020 was a great improvement.

The biggest issues with the JD 2010 were the sleeve and deck. All the engine sleeves are mounted to a single deck. They are prone to engine problems and parts are hard to find to non existent. A poor hydraulic system compared to their bigger brothers and terrible brakes. The are plain hard to work on and the parts are expensive. I grew up on JD but I would take the 65 in a heart beat, gas or diesel over that 2010. Even with the gas, it will still be cheaper to feed than to keep that 2010 running. Even the John Deere guys will tell you RUN, don't walk away from that 2010.

I grew up with john deeres and some masseys. You absolutly do not want a 2010 diesel. The gas ones were bad enough, but 1010 and 2010 diesels are worthless. They are next to impossible to get parts for and expensive when you do find them. 2010's had hydraulic and trans problems. All 4 sleeves were attached to a plate that is sandwiched between the head and block and usually leaked. The diesel was worse than the gas because of more compression. The Massey 65 is a good tractor if it hasn't been abused.

I'm more of a deere guy and I wouldn't buy a 2010 unless it was very cheap. Massey 65's are tough little guys.

Run from the 2010 as fast as you can! I sold one that ran and drove for $750 and felt great about the deal! Worst engines ever. Small radiator for the heat. Shift issues. The list goes on...

If the other posters haven't pointed you the right way already consider this.My Dad rebuilt a 2010 diesel then traded it the next year on a new 1830.He told me he got so little on his trade that he probably could have bought the new one for about the same money on a no trade deal.He was just that willing to see the 2010 leave.

The 1010/2010 gas aren't that bad. Asking about a JD on a MF forum is going to get you the expected answer. Ask over on the JD side and you might get a different answer. I own a 1010 and 65. Both are good tractors.

On the MF forum he will actually get a better answer to his question, most of the John Deere guys think the only good tractors are all JD's. JD has built some good tractors, but the 2010 isn't one of them just like there are some MF's that aren't good.

I would ask if you've ever owned or worked on a 1010/2010 series JD? The sleeve deck is a freak, yes, but beyond that they are pretty straight forward tractors. It's not like they are junk, maybe not Deeres best, but not junk. But like so many things people form opinions based on what they read and hear. People will also tell you Multipower MF don't last long and that they can't be fixed, that the Case Caseomatic tranny is the same as a Ford Selectospeed and that you can't get parts for a David Brown, none of which are true.

One of my uncles had a 2010 (he always had John Deere's), he thought JD didn't build any bad tractors until he got a 2010. It was the only JD he didn't keep very long. His favorite was the 4020, it never let him down (and he worked it hard).

So you base your opinion on your uncles opinion. That's fine. But opinions vary, especially when based on someone who actually owns and uses whatever it is you're discussing. My experience, and that of some others, is that they aren't complete junk. I'd lots rather have a 1010/2010 than a 2n/9n/8n/Jubilee/600/800 Ford or a few other tractors. Just my opinion.

Many years ago when we were farming, we had several brands of tractors, mainly Masseys. We also bought 2 cyl. JD's that served us well. Then we bought a new JD 2010 gasser. It was the worst tractor that we ever had. All kinds of problems. My two cents worth!
