Pros and Cons - MF 3120

My Uncle is looking to purchase a Massey Ferguson 3120. I know next to nothing about Masseys (grew up around John Deeres, and I frequent the Ford Forum on here since I inherited my grandfather's 1957 841 Ford last year), so he and I were wondering about the pros and cons of this tractor.

The model he's looking at is a 2WD with a cab on it.

Can anyone here with experience with the 3210 give me any advice or perhaps talk about the good, the bad, and the ugly regarding this model tractor in general.

It's got around 3,000 hours on it, and the guy is asking around $18,500.

Thanks!

3120 is over 20? 25 years old? 3000 hours comes to??? Less than 150 hours a year? 5 weeks work? Either in real good shape or the clock is off. 18 or 19 sounds high, but then again, I am a cheapskate...

The price is what is it is. I called to make sure I had gotten it right. I could chalk that up to the area I live in. I don't know about Masseys, but old Fords vary in price depending on what part of the country you are.

Roughly 3600 hours, so I was a bit low on that. He said it looks to be in pretty good shape.

I understand the hydraulic pump runs at 13 GPM. He'd be using this to pull a feed wagon which uses both remotes. Would that over-tax the hydraulics?

He's also concerned about getting parts. How much of a problem would that be?

Thanks!

Did you check 'tractor data.com'?
They were made in France, so parts can get iffy compare to most UK or US/Canadian models. Only made a few years, out of production decades ago, and 18k is alotta money no matter where you are!!!

I know you won't get a 100 HP early 90's Deere for anywhere CLOSE to $18,000. I don't know hardly anything about Masseys, that's why I'm here.

For what it is worth I have a 3120. It is 4wd and was built in 94 with approx 8k hours on the clock. It has the Dynashift gear box. It is very similar to the mf 3095.

Everything still works as it should (with the exception of fuel used on the datatronic!) so I have no complaints, a cracking tractor.

Not sure how the 3120 sold on this side of the pond compares to the US ones

I am from France, so I know a little bit about them.
3120 where Turbocharged version of the 3000. They were good tractors, particularly with the Dynashift transmission. They can go 10K hours with no problems. They are overall built very solid.
The 3120-3125 being turned-up versions of the 3080-3090, I would absolutely not recommend them for heavy pulling work (when engine ran out of power at low speed like 3-4MPH), particularly in 2WD, since only the rear axle is pulling. For that a 3600 series tractor is much better.
For feed mixer, PTO work, they would do very well. Most of the dynashift transmission, PTO, rear axle would be exactly the same than current Massey tractors of 150HP. Trough better heat threatments, etc, they can put much more power trough them.

Parts are very well available for these and reasonably priced too. 3120 is one of the last additions to 3000 series so it doesn't have the issues that the first models had when they came available in 1987. Nice advanced tractor with not too many electronics.
