MultiPower Question

I have a 165 with multipower which is stuck in low. Is there anyway to lock the multipower in high? The tractor has to be split to install a new ring gear. While it's apart, if the multipower can be locked in high, that would be the time to do it.
Also, about the same time the multipower locked itself in low, the independent PTO lost its power. The shaft turns when the engine is running but it won't power my bushhog.

From what I've read on YTMag, fixing multipower is real expensive...locking it in high would be fine for my purposes.

Thanks

It is not possible to lock into high because it takes hydraulic pressure to engage clutch pack also if pto quit at same time that tells me you lost hydraulic pressure since they both use same pump to activate. Three point should still work since it has its own separate pump for 3 pt only.

Hi, When the MP lever is up, then go to the transmission. There is a "pin" coming out
with a clamp on it. Loosen the clamp and then tap the pin downward and then retighten
the clamp. I think your MP is out of adjustment. Chuck

It soumds like you have a split pipe internally....sometimes the dowels holding the main pump get loose or broken and the piggy back aux pump moves with it and can snap or crack a pipe inside...another problem is a valve not working correctly letting the oil flow unrestricted around the oil cooler and back into the gearbox through the front bearing.....there is a small ball-bearing and spring valve on the front bearing, which I have seen causing similar symptoms to what you have on your tractor....And it could just be a worn pump...I have seen these shear the splines off....good luck with it!.................Sam

It depends on what you consider expensive. I rebuilt my clutch pack and sealing ring for around 3 bills with my own labor. This was on a 65. I love my MP. Wouldn't be without it.

As was stated earlier in this post, it is not possible to lock the transmission shift in high multi-power as it is a hydraulic shift. If the multi-power high range is not working, it is usually either bad discs in the clutch pack or the internal auxilliary pump is worn. It can also be caused by worn sealing rings on the transmission input shaft housing and input shafts. If the tractor does not have independent pto, the pto will operate regardless. If it has independent pto, it will have a double auxilliary pump with one half supplying oil to the pto clutch pack and the other supplying oil to the multi-power clutch pack and the pto hydraulic brake.

To repair these components will require a good service manual such as the I&T manual for the trouble shooting and repair procedures as it will most likely require the removal of the transmission to repair the input shafts, shaft housing and clutch pack. The auxilliary pump is located in the rear housing atop of the main hydraulic lift pump.

Please do not take this the wrong way, but it is possible to lock these tractors in high multipower. The clutch pack is drilled and bolted together.

I suggest you download this file and spend some time reading it.

It is from Bigdean. He was Massey mechanic for a long time and knew these tractors.
