Massey 275 Overheating - Water in Engine Oil

Howdy!

We received a MF 275 today. The customer said:

1. He was pulling a disk, tractor overheated (water spewing from radiator overflow line) in under 5 minutes use.
2. Called someone, then installed a new thermostat. Overheated again (water spewing from radiator overflow line) in 4 minutes with a "light" load on the engine @ 1500 to 1600 rpm.
3. He noticed what he thinks is water/oil coming out of exhaust manifold.
4. When he gives tractor "throttle," white smoke from exhaust.

So. Leakdown test first?

Looks like you need to clean that radiator out good too! Looks like lots of blockage!
Use a good sealer(I use permatex copper coat) on that head gasket when reinstalling......torque it down per torque sequence and run up to operating temp and retorque.
Might not be bad idea to have head checked for flatness and cracks. This owner will have a few bucks wrapped up in it before you are done! Good luck

I agree with ptfarmer. Water spewing out of the radiator overflow under light load is a pretty good indicator of a blown head gasket at the least
and possibly a cracked head. When the engine is run this way compression will also cut a grove in the top of the block between the cylinders
where the gasket is blown.

Thank you for your responses. We pulled the head & will be bringing it to a local shop for pressure / magnaflux tests. Thankfully, the owner did not run the tractor under these conditions for a long time...only a few hours.

We will pull the radiator & have it cleaned/tested next.

The owner told me that before he bought the tractor ~2 years ago, the previous owner had the engine in this 275 rebuilt. Maybe they reused the cylinder head bolts. Are these torque-to-yield head bolts?

Thanks - will update. :)

The machine shop said the Cylinder Head inspection yielded the following:

1. Passed pressure test & magnaflux test
2. Head is slightly warped & needs to be resurfaced.
3. Valve Stem Seals & Guide Liners need to be replaced.

Moving forward...
