hard starting perkins

354 perkins starts hard after it sets a day or two. the motor is in a combine but my question is on the pump system. the filter system is marked 1, 2, 3, 4 on the filter housing. the line that comes off the lower part of the pump went to the "out" side of the filter housing closest to the pump (sorry don't remember the number. my old system went to the "in" so that's how I set it up. seems to me it's bleeding off just a bit. little snort of juice and it goes and runs fine. I have not put the line back to how it was as of yet. it's a CAV pump and I was thinking that line was lube line so should flow back to the filters "inlet" side not "outlet" but I could be wrong. it's happened before.
thoughts?

been a long time since I worked on a 510 and I could be wrong but the line you're referring to is the inlet (pressure) line from the fuel filters to the injection pump if it is hooked up to the return side of the fuel filters you could be getting air in the line after not running for a long period, because the return side of the filters have a bleed off orifice in the banjo bolt that connects the line from the injector pump to the return side of the filters to the return line on the injectors. also check all the lines and connections from the injector pump back thru the filters to the lift pump also from the lift pump to the tank a small leak can give problems if the lift pump internal check valves are worn and allow fuel to seep back toward the tank while not running.

im in the outlet side of the filters going to the pump, this would be the line that is the bleed off or lube side of the pump I call it that goes back to the filters. I'm wondering if you not correct though that it's bleeding some bad on the lube side of the pump and thus lessening the fuel in the head of the pump making a hard start. I think I will try that first. I have not seen any other leaks(had some but think I fixed em all) but will check again.
thanks for the input
