MF 255 draft control problem

I have a 255 and i think the draft control is broken. when using a chisel plow or a subsoiler I tried to
make it work but I get no response out of it with the lever in any position. I have to use the position
control constantly when i hit a hard spot.
It has never worked on this tractor but from my understanding when adjusted it should lift the 3 point when
you hit a hard spot or it digs too deep. again it makes no difference where the lever is and the 3 point
will only lift if i lift it slightly with the position control
any ideas what the problem could be?

Hello,
To carry out an initial test remove any implement from the tractor. Place the DRAFT lever in the fully lowered position. Using hand force or a small pry bar check the top link attachment point for end float. Ideally there should be none. If you have endfloat it will be necessary to remove the control spring by undoing the special nut at the rear of the hydraulic cover and service the control spring assembly. If there is no end float your problem might be due to a damaged DRAFT roller frame inside the hydraulic cover. This will entail removal of the cover and stripping of the linkage.
Let us know what you find.

I may have misunderstood the way you're operating the lift but the position control has to be in the full up or transport position in order for the draft lever to work, the draft lever will allow raising and lowering of an implement but can't be used for positioning the lift unless it has an implement that creates draft i.e. moldboard plow, subsoiler ect.,

I may have the terminology backwards but the way I understand it is the position control raises and lowers the arms(which it does on mine) and the draft control is supposed to keep the load constant when plowing. when running the subsoiler I lower it to the depth I want with the position control. when I hit a hard spot it stops is stopped in its tracks. The way I understand it If the Draft control works the arms should lift slightly to keep from stalling the tractor and keep the load even or constant? I can lower the subsoiler to the depth I want but I cannot get the 3 point to do this automatic lifting action when I hit a hard spot. I have tried the Draft control lever in every position and nothing changes and I have to manually lift the 3pt hitch slightly with the Position control to un-stall the tractor.

Where the upper link of the 3 point hooks to the tractor there is a big clevis, that clevis should not be loose (should not able to move in and out easy). If the clevis is tight then the problem could be the internal linkage under the top cover could not be adjusted properly, or something in the linkage under the top cover could be out of place, missing, bent, or broken. Does it look like the top has been off?

set the position control lever to the full raised position and leave it there while using the draft lever,if the position lever moves off the full up when the draft lever is moved the draft will not work correct. on our mf's with a subsoiler attached I move the draft lever low enough to allow the subsoiler to go into the ground then adjust it to where I want it to run then set the lever stop about 1/2" below the lever as a guage that way I can easily make changes if the ground makes a drastic change also it allow me to start off a little deep to get the subsoiler in the ground if it drops to fast or gets to fluctuating to much to fast or to slow that is controlled by the drop response control lever located under the controls next to the right hand foot board.

Hi,
Endfloat is the anount of in and out movement that you can produce by hand pressure at the top link connection point. As mentioned the amount of endfloat should be zero.
