To have it done "correctly", is hard to tell without having the engine apart. If you assume to replace ALL of the internal parts (valves, valve guides, springs, cam bearings, new oil pump, thermostat, etc) in addition to new water pump, rebuilt clutch disc, rebuilt pressure plate, carb rebuilding, regrinding the crank, regrinding the camshaft, resizing the rods, boring the block, surfacing lifters, line boring/honing the mains, with reassembly of the engine and reinstalling the engine into the tractor, initial startup with break-in and tuning, 2 hours engine removal, 2 hours dis-assembly, 4 hours engine assembly, 2 hours engine installation, and 2 hours break-in and tuning (on dyno), you are probably looking at $4800.00. This would be as close as you could get to a "new" engine and, of course, is the most expensive proposition. This option however, should come with a substantial warranty.

If you went to the other end of the spectrum and assume that none of your internal parts need replaced (doubtful) and that all of your other parts do not need reconditioning, you are still looking at a rebuild kit and the labor. Labor, however, will likely increase somewhat because the parts inspection/cleaning will have to be more detailed. This would put you at about $3100. Again, with the lack of complete renewal, this option would not likely include any type of warranty.

Your skepticism is understandable, however he is asking for someone else to provide a turn-key rebuilt engine installed in his tractor. There is an awful lot of labor that you are excluding, that YOU would normally do for yourself. Just think seriously about all of the little things that have to be done. Also consider that you are doing the rebuild for someone else, you don't want to have problems.

If this were my tractor, yes I could probably rebuild it myself for $1500 in parts and machine work, but then again I am not charging myself for labor. And if something goes wrong, I am the one who fixes it!
