I replaced one of the two hydraulic hoses for the hydraulic steering that had a leak but it is still difficult to turn the steering wheel. Do I need to bleed the steering system? How do I do that?

and

When checking the hydraulic fluid level I noticed that the fluid is milky indicating water has entered the system. What should I do?

thanks

It steered fine until the hydraulic hose to the steering cylinder sprung a leak. Then it steered hard. I then replaced the hose, added some hydraulic fluid to the system and tested it. It continues to steer hard.

I'm presuming that the steering is using the same hydraulic fluid as the rest of the tractor right?

No it does not. The plug I was talking about is to fill it up. There is also a
filter inside of that reservoir. If its low now might be a good time to change
it. I run ATF in mine.

I believe the manual says to use permatran (hy tran
hydraulic), which is the same fluid the rest of the tractor uses.
Just about anything will work. I've used power steering fluid,
and that. Both work fine. I'm sure transmission fluid is fine
too. It is a completely different system though. The power
steering pump is on the side of the engine block. That's
where you fill/bleed the system. An operator's manual is not
very expensive for these.

The PS doesn't run off the tractor hydraulics. There is a separate reservoir on the side of the engine, looks like a can laying flat with a plug almost at the top (of the side). MY 285 takes an 11/16 wrench to open. If tractor is hard to steer, there is probably no PS fluid. Be careful when you remove the plug, if the reservoir is empty, the plug will literally blow out with the last turn of the plug. Fill the reservoir with ATF, screw the plug back and you should have steering.
