MF235 3pt lift operation

Is the 3pt lift hydraulic pump in the back?
If the two stage clutch is depressed all the way, the lift is dead?
Depressed partway, the 3pt lift is active?
The pto engage lever, does that effect the lift pump at all?

Thank you.

One more follow up question. Is there a need for a PTO overrunning clutch, can a rotary cutter's
energy drive the machine even though the clutch is depressed?
Thanks your all your help.

I have 240, and for some reason every so often when I'd stop, the rotating mower would BANG!!! to a stop, something inside the tranmissin jammed it to a stop. So I installed over-run coupler and that quit. Glad I did.

Hello,
To clarify a couple of points;
Yes, the pump is mounted in the lower area of the rear centre casing.
Yes, with the dual clutch fully depressed the drive to the Pump and PTO are disengaged.
Yes, depressed partway only the drive to the gearbox is disengaged and the drive to the PTO and pump remain active.
The position of the PTO engagement lever will not affect the pump operation in any way.
If your tractor does not have an Independant PTO, Multi-power or Auxilliary pump then the main hydraulic pump can be lifted out through the top of the casing once the top cover has been removed.
If you have the IPTO, MP or Aux pumps fitted then you will need to split the tractor between the gearbox and rear centre casing in addition to the above.
As to the over-run clutch; Many machines such as balers where a flywheel is used have an over-run clutch built in to them. Items such as a rotary mower may also have one. The necessity for an ORC is moreso when the tractor has an IPTO. A brake pad is normally applied to the drum to prevent rotation of the PTO from oil surge and drag on the plates. This will bring a rotating PTO to a stop quickly once it is disengaged.
Using a rotary mower for example which has blade momentum will try to keep the PTO turning until the momentum fades from the braking force. This unnecessary rotation will cause rapid wear of the brake pad and drum surface. The pad can often be replaced without major stripping but the drum cannot. Momentum on the blade will give only a very very brief cutting opportunity.

Thanks for the info. It would appear to me that the lift and PTO setup is OK for my use.
I asked the questions because I am in the market for a utility tractor and Ford 641's and this MF235 are available close by. Also, I like MF.
This MF235 4cyl 145 continental gas has the sweptback axle and the apparently problematic
power steering. It is still in the snow and battery dead and owner not in a big hurry to start it up. I did see that there appears to be about 1/2 turn of free play in the steering wheel. Does that go away when powered up, or is that a sign this particular tractor has the power steering issue?
It has a ROPS, diff lock. Sheet metal is a little hacked up. It has chains instead of winding screws
on the lift arms. Tach. has condensation on inside. Rear tires good, front mismatched truck type.
What about that steering?

I would wait on the concerns with the steering until the engine is running, without power steering pump pressure the steering will be loose. Joe

Hi, it sounds like this tractor has had a bit of a hard life. If it's still in the snow make sure that there is antifreeze in it or it has been drained. Get it running before buying! If it has the integral power steering unit in the steering box I can't help you there as we don't have that type in the UK. As far as I am aware any play will not diminish when the engine is started. If it has the swept axle check the condition of the pivot bush and alignment of the axle. Check whether the plate on the underside of the clutch housing is fitted. With a lot of steering play it sounds like this tractor might have had a front end loader on it and done a lot of work. Be careful!
