transmission cotter pin

Is there an easy way to replace the cotter pin at the bottom of the transmission on a MF 35?. You know the one that is supposed to drain excess fluid so as not to ruin the clutch. Mine has been missing for years. And while the hole is clear and weeps, the pin should be replaced.

So true, this hole bit me once, got tractor TO35 stuck, mud plugged hole, oil got on clutch.

Years later, cotter key finally broke off.

I so hope some tells us we can replace the cotter key. And how to replace the key

Thanks,
Fred

Hello Gary,
There should be no problem in replacing the split pin in the bottom of the bell housing. It will not be a doddle but someone with smallish flexible hands should be able to drop one into place. It is essential as the continual movement will allow any oil to drain out. It was mentioned that one has been fitted to the access plate. This is an alternative but not so easy if a loader or other implement is fitted at this mounting point.

I keep thinking that if you wander around a good hardware store, something will come to mind. I can almost see it, thinking outside the box and all....

I have not tried this yet, but to replace the cotter key in my 1957,TO35.

I plan to stick a length of weed eater string into the hole, hopefully taking the inspection plate off, I will be able to attach my cotter key to the string and pull it into place.

Do not know if that plan will work!!!!,,

if you are going to take the insp cover off why just put a cotter in upside down and bend the ends that protrude out the hole ???

I was going to take the inspection plate off to give me room to work on threading the string and new cotter pin into the drain hole of the bell housing.

however, it may not work, I was just laying under the tractor one day looking at the problem and determined that is the path I was going to take to try and replace the cotter pin, however it may not work.

anything would be better than what happen to me, the housing filling up with oil and ruining my clutch.
