44 to 101 Rear End Housing Exchange?

I've wondered about that too, looks like the bolt pattern is the same. Early 44s had the shaft chain coupler too, while the late models used a bolt style coupler. Might be easier to find a 44-6, but it has the Continental engine.

Does the 2 engines turn in the same direction?
Just saying because I got a 44 that had a 101 starter I believe and it makes the 44 engine turns backwards. I might be super wrong there, but I would like to double check.

Yes, the engines both turn clockwise as looking from the front. There are few engines by comparison that turn CCW as far as I know..... It wouldn't start by rotating backwards anyway. Even if the starters are on opposite sides of the two motors, rotation of the flywheel should be the same direction.

Of course with a little work, the Detroit two stroke series can be made to run backwards though I've never done it.
