I have a MF40 industrial with a Perkins 3 cylinder gas engine.I can not find the serial number on the engine. It is not next to the engine block on the upper left side next to the water outlet.Any suggestions on where to look.
I am also trying to get the head off.I have removed 18 head bolt nuts and the water hoses.I did not remove the exhaust or intake manifold.I am trying to lift it from opposite corners with an engine hoist but it will not come off.Do I need to remove the manifolds? Any other suggestions?

The manifolds shouldn't need to come off, it could be possible for rust to form around the studs in the head making pulling the head difficult. I'd soak all the studs with penetrating oil if any rust is seen, also the head gasket itself could be holding it on (especially if someone used a sealer of some sort on the head gasket). You could get a small, thin chisel, put it between the head, and block, and gently tap on the chisel while seeing if the head moves up any (on some I've had to this with a heavier hit on the chisel than I normally like). You will probably need to use the chisel in several different places to get it to let go, just do it nice, and easy.

Like pt said, the manifold 'can' stay on, since you are using a hoist, you might be better off leaving it.
You sure you got ALL the bolts out? Does it turn over? Crank it a few times. You might get the compression to top the gasket loose without risking damage.
