Can I test the hyd pump in my MF 30 industrial

I have the top cover off of the tranny housing. The three point does not function. It was full of milky gunk. I drained and cleaned the housing. I am going to pull the pump out to get all the gunk out and wash up the pump with solvent. If I put the pump back in, can I run the tractor with a little oil to tell if the pump is pumping? Thanks

Hi Dick,

Yes, you can run the pump in a little oil and see if it pumps, but I don't know of a way to see if it's actually making usable pressure until you put it fully back together. The H bar with the roller? it works a valve that puts the pump in 'neutral' (bypasses the output tube), and unless that valve is in the proper position and the oil is given an enclosed space to 'push' against, you won't know the actual functioning of the pump.

When you get it out, I'd check the condition of the piston bores and rings. If they look to be in good shape (no broken rings or excessively scored bores), it's probably just fine.

In light of the two recent threads here about a malfunctioning 3pt lift rupturing the rear housing, I'd read those too, think about replacing the relief valve while you're into it, and making sure the control levers are assembled correctly. DavidP has good photos that show how it should be.

Thanks. I saw those post about split housings. Ouch!! I should have a service manual by tomorrow I ordered. That bar that engages the pump was not connected. The pin and keeper were missing.Found them in bottom of housing. Not sure if I might have caused that to happen during cover removal? I'll order a releive valve to be safe.Dick

Did you pull the cover off the right hand side (where the trans/hydraulic oil dipstick is), and remove the roller that's about 1/4" in diameter x a inch or so wide before pulling the top cover?
