Could someone tell me what the correct thing is to plug this hole marked with tape. It is 5/16 course threads. Maybe it has a purpose but I have not figured out what this hole is even for.

My 33 has a similar port. It is plugged with a set screw. Original? I don't know.. But it was there when I bought the tractor. If not original, it at least gives a "neat" appearance.

Hope this helps

Brad

If it is a 277, I have a 444 that is original, there is a wire loom bracket there to hold the wires to the generator and it is factory. I also have a 44 Special with the 277, the generator wires come around the front under the water pump, it has the boss cast into the block in that location with no hole. the 260 blocks have no hole either, at least any I have ever seen.

Just got done restoring my 444 and that bolt had a metal loop for gen wire loom to run through, like Mike stated

I have an original condition 44 Special late model and it does not have a hole on that raised surface. From your picture, the engine looks like it is gold coloured rather than red. Could it be a 444 engine; that would concur with the other posters here.
