MF135 shift levels

I need to replace the shift lever boots on a 1966 MF135 that i just bought and was wondering what to do with the ball and socket part under the boot for lubrication. Is it supposed to be packed with grease or oil or is it oiled from the underside from inside the transmission some how?

I would use the same oil that is used in the transmission sump to lube the shifter lever balls.

Then maybe cover the top of the shifter housing with grease, do not want any grease getting down into and contaminating the transmission oil.

You are on the right track, the key is to keep the rubber boots in good to excellent condition.

I believe I heated those boots on mama bears stove in a pan of hot water to soften them so they just slipped on, no problem.

However, it's been a while since I replaced the boots on my tractor as they are still in good condition.

I put a little trans oil on the shift lever balls, then put some wheel bearing, or silicone grease on the top of them, and install the new boots. Also thin coating silicone grease on the inside of the new boots won't hurt.
