180 pto grinds when engaging

180 mf ground driven pto portion works? But when engaging pto it just grinds doesn't engage. What should I do to fix or adjust? Thanks for any info

Start with resetting the clutch pedal adjustments per the service manual, if no parts are severely worn or damaged it should work again. I had a 275 that the PTO pressure plate was cracked, had to split that one as the adjustments didn't help..

On the independent pto will have a couple of hydraulic fittings on the cover that the pto lever is on, if it's just a plate with a lever in it, it's live pto.

Might try this: works on my old TO35 with live pto

Turn motor off, now try to engage the pto lever into gear with motor off

If it goes into gear, push clutch all the way down and start motor,

You are good to go

But as others have said if you have to do this ever time you need a clutch adjustment of some type.

But this might get you going.

I can't remember for sure, but I don't think the tractors with Independent PTO had ground drive setting, could be wrong though. Sounds like you've got the live pto, since there wouldn't be a grinding noise when pulling the lever on a hydraulic pto valve.....but likely just needs an adjustment.
Adjust your clutch pedal free play to have about 1 1/2" of "slop" at the top of the travel. Then when you push your pedal all the way down to the floor board you should feel a second stage almost all the way down at the bottom, that is your pto clutch releasing. If the pto still grinds when going in, it needs to be adjusted on the pressure plate. To do this take the inspection cover (4 large bolts) off the bottom of the bell housing, and if you roll the flywheel over by hand there will be 3 bolts with a jam nut (5/16" bolts, 1/2" wrench) equally spaced around the flywheel. Between the end of the bolt and the pressure plate should be around .070" feeler gauge, adjust the bolt and jam nut until all 3 are equal (may take a couple times around to get them all perfect). The manuals show using a slightly larger gap, but I have had to go tighter (.065-.070") on all of ours to get them to engage smoothly.
Now, if the feeler gage gaps check out fine, and the pedal feels ok, you could still have a tied up clutch throwout bearing, if that bearing goes bad then the pto shaft will turn all the time regardless.
Hope this helps

Is continous pto live pto? I'm gathering
all this info and hopefully going to try
adjusting it this weekend.

Independent pto can engaged without having to push the clutch in. A live pto has a 2 stage clutch, 1st stage allows you to shift gears, then you push it in more to release the 2nd stage to engage it into pto.

Is the continous the live pto? It does work if you engage it before starting. It does have ground drive.

You have live pto since you can only engage it with the engine off so the clutch, or clutch pedal needs to be adjusted. Worst case you may need a new clutch. You pto shifter should have a ground, neutral, and engine (live) position so it shouldn't be running continuously.

This has been awhile but if I remember correctly my 180 had a lever on left side of seat with 3 positions, ground, neutral, and engine. Then you have a two stage clutch pedal. Push it part way down ground travel stops, rest of way down PTO stops. A little trick I remember was to engage engine pto, at idle, push clutch pedal clear down and hold, then move one of the hydraulic outlet levers to raise to pressure against relief valve, and that would stop the clutch from free wheeling and would pop into gear without grinding.
