It is a Continental powered gas MF 165 which I forgot to note earlier. Everyone has missed the part about what spark plugs would be a good fit for normal use during hay season along with some occasional dirt tillage work when reseeding the hay fields. Are Auto Lite 386's the suitable plug or something more in the cold or hot range? This is the only MF 165 tractor in the area and I don't have anyone close for advise and don't really trust the recent high school drop out working the counter at an auto parts store for that advice, Hal.

Thanks for your response and the engine has a recent total rebuild and is strong and runs good except for an ignition type issue that developed when hauling loaded wagons to the barn with square baled hay that summer. I am just trying to have it resolved before we start the hay game again this year. It is a very handy tractor which is easy and simple to use and starts in cold weather very well, Hal.

I have a 65 with the Continental. The ignition system is pretty solid in those. If the problem doesn't go away I'd be looking at the switch and wiring. The switch wears over the years. I have one position that mimics a bad ignition.

Thanks much for the possible disguised issue. The problem happened while pulling a wagon load of baled hay about 1/2 mile to a barn from the field and when going up a fairly good hill it started missing on a cylinder. This happened after working the tractor in that manner for a couple of hours. I haven't checked anything yet but I know the ignition wires (are original or something off of a different vehicle dad stuck on the tractor) need replacing and might just be a small piece of carbon shorting out a plug. It generally is a very good strong tractor for 52 hp so I know it's time for a general tune up and replacement of some of the components so it can work again this hay season, Hal.

If you can afford it replace the points, and condenser with electronic ignition. The electronic ignition is easy, and doesn't take long to install, and if the ignition timing is already set right you don't even have to reset it.
