MH 44 Standard front axle

Does anyone know if the front axle on a standard (non adjustable) Massey 44 is the same as a 444? I know that one from a 55 is heavier; would an axle from a 30 or 33 be lighter? Is the only difference between a 44 front end and that of a 44 Special or 444 the steel vs. cast front hubs? Thanks, Ben

I will try and answer your questions, a 44 standard front is lighter and lower and narrower than a 444 standard front. the 444 front has cast hubs while the 44 front has tin wheels. A 44 standard is a short frame tractor and a 444 is a long frame tractor. I believe a 44 Special standard is also a long frame tractor. As far as I know and from what I have seen a front from a 30 standard, a 33 standard and a 44 standard are all the same, the 30 has 15 inch wheels and the others have 16 inch wheels, they all have the large hubs. I'm not sure on the 44 Special, I have never seen or owned one. The 444 standard has a completely different front end. What are you trying to swap??

Neighbour has a 444 that has a jobber front end put on it years ago and is restoring it, thus needs the proper axle. I have a 44 Special and from what I see, it has the same axle and hubs as a 444. He also has a 44 Standard; we should measure its axle and compare it to mine. Thanks, Ben

yes you are correct mike, 44 special has a longer wheel base than the 44 standard. and also has the heavy cast 16"hubs on the front wheels. i posted this a while back and some thought i was joking.
