Electronic ignition for Continental 4

I seem to have to dress the points in my '59 with Conti 4 Delco distributor quite often in the wet season. I do have the plastic cover over the points assembly (under the rotor) but they still corrode. I have not tried new points, thinking they would probably corrode just as fast, no?

Is there a drop in electronic conversion that goes in the existing distributor without removing it from the engine or having to re-time? Don't want to open a bigger can of worms than filing the points a couple time a year. Pertronix? Which one?

TIA
Paul

might try these brand points:

Echlin or Blue Streak I have had good luck with both brands, however someone said they had merged
I buy at napa,

be sure to change out the condenser and rotor when you change points

I also use autolite plugs (non resistor type) resistor plugs really cut the voltage.

might be time for a new heavier higher voltage coil, so you have a hotter spark, new copper wires

these old tractor need the best of everything to start and run on cold mornings.

I also use #1 gauge battery cable wires to carry more voltage to the starter.

I would say there is a reason you are having to file the points and I think its low voltage.

also not you may have filed off the harden coating on the points so they corrode faster.

I have two tractors with Z134 engines, a 202 and a TO35. On the 202 I fitted electronic ignition, the 35 still has points. The 202 starts better, runs smoother and has more power overall......Since I put the electronic kit in I haven't had even one fouled plug and that was 3-4 years ago. In fact, I'm not sure why I haven't converted the 35 yet, just put a new set of plugs in this evening and dressed and adjusted the points before plowing some snow.........

Edit: It's the Pertronix kit from this web site.

Thanks guys. Does the Pertronix 'drop in' like advertised? You need to pull the old points plate out right, and replace with theirs? What about the trigger wheel, how does that go on? Do I need to pull the distributor and re-time?

It's easier than changing a set of points, no adjustments to make. No you don't pull the distributor out, if timing was corrrect before it should remain so. The trigger wheel just slides over the shaft from what I recall. I think I had it done in 20 minutes or so.

I put Pertronix in my Standard engined FE35 several years ago. Easy as pie and I don't think I've had the distributor cap off since. TDF

(quoted from post at 17:11:43 01/30/15) Oh, and make sure you have a "resistor" type ignition coil.

Thanks, will do. The instruction say something about filing the distributor cap for the wire to go through. Did you do that or just pass them through the old hole for the points wire?

Thanks! Yes I finally found that number in my parts book. The only other Pertronix they list for a Massey is for an Autolite distributor. Maybe they don't offer a kit for me?

http://www.pertronix.com/catalogs/pdf/ptx/2015/ptx2015_ignition_conv.pdf

It is a Delco distributor, AGCO part number 182852M91, Delco part numbers 1111722, 1111740, 1112570. So the Pertronix 1143 should be the right one.
