Help! Putting a Alternator on a 1960 MF65 diesel?

Does any one know what alternator will fit on a 1960 MF65 Diesel? I checked with Yesterday Tractor about the alternator that would fit the MF65. The sales guy said they have only a universal alternator kit. He has no ideal if it would fit or not. I need to know from someone that has put one on a MF65.

I have no idea, but two thoughts come to mind. First, you might go by the best NAPA store in your area [they're all different], and see what they say. They might let you see how big the units are, see if they would fit. NAPA provided me with 12V alternator for my Farmall.
Second, you might give Charlie a shout-out; Charlie Uthke, Charlie's Repair, 22195 State Hwy 56, Austin, MN 55912 [email protected]
He helped me on a Farmall, seems a rally good electrical guy, very knowledgable.

I replaced the alternator on my MF35 which has a 3 cyl Perkins diesel engine. I went to the local auto alternator rebuilder place and bought a regular alternator for around $75.00. Had to grind down one of the lugs to fit the mounts which voided the warranty but what the heck. It only does 20 hours a year so the alternator will last a lifetime.

I put a standard 3 wire Bosch altenator on my MF65. Just about any
standard altenator will do.

The main work is fabricating a bracket to hold the altenator. I also
had to grind a small amount of metal off the heavy bracket holding
the radiator and front end to get clearance for the v belt

With a more complex altenator bracket, it might be possible to
avoid grinding the front end bracket for belt clearance, but I saw
the method above as the simplest solution.

Bob,

As I'm doing my research. I just came across to guy that put an alternator on their MF65. One did remove some of the material from the front mount. And the other one. Made a bracket that haled the alternator out from the tractor front mount. Clearing the mount all together. To me that stuck out to far. I think I will go the first route.

Brendon,

I don't think nothing is wrong with the generator. It is just old and beat up. Plus I am redoing this tractor from the ground up. It is cheap to put a new alternator on than buy a new generator. I think ia alternator will be more reliable down the road.

I've redone three 65s and stuck with the generator.
I have a local guy that rebuilds them. I like the
looks of the original genny.

I agree with Brandon, had my generator rebuilt, totally redone,
looks like a new one, works and fits perfect, good warranty,
$90.00. Why mess with changing the original design?

I went the altenator route as I wanted more amps to run an electric pump on a small spray rig.

Did the same on my MF35 for the same reason. The 35 was much easier to do, just had to fabricate a bracket for the altenator and there was plenty of clearance for the v belt.

If the generator doesn't work out let me know and I will get some information off mine. Its been about 20 years so I don't remember exactly. Its not diesel but I think the mount would about the same.
