power steering cylinder followup

Well i went to my local dealer today to find out about replacing the steering cylinder on my 165 or the piston rod which was broke. I could have cried. Cylinder price $2600 & some change. Piston rod price was $900.00 & some change. Told them to keep it I would scrap tractor first. Came home looked online finally found the correct piston rod to rebuild cylinder. I tell you what these tractor companies are something else.

At least you now know which cylinder you have and the part # of the rod and piston. The 1027231M91 part as available as an aftermarket part for a fraction of the price. Google Massey 1027231M1 to find several sources.

Yeah they sure are something else. I was at a farm fixing a guys other tractor. I looked at his 6270 MF and decided i didn't have enough info to diagnose it properly.
He called MF they came out looked at it for 20 mins, did a test and said it needed to go in they couldn't work on it there. it needed trucking and washing.I Herd him cough when they figured they might need $6000 or more before it got back to him and could be 3 weeks.
I bet if you go back in 12 months you won't be able to buy anything for that tractor. I hear from trade buddies all the big manufacturers are dumping the old reliable parts lines like MF 165 others /Many Case models , and heard JD are going to thin the herd on a lot of older stuff to. It will be jobber /used or nothing to repair these tractors.

Robert, I can see from a "bean counter" POV that it's the new equipment sales that are keeping design engineers employed, keeping innovations coming to market, and keeping factories running; and that continuing to support old machinery long after its intended service life isn't selling new stuff. Then again, losing the "good will" of long term users of their equipment when the dealer is unable or unwilling to provide parts at a reasonable cost isn't factored in, because it doesn't neatly show up on a spread sheet. Their loss.

I spent far too long working on a neighbors '58 JD 420 last summer, and compared to my '61 MF65 (and '51 SA), the number of obsolete OEM JD and even some discontinued aftermarket parts was astounding. I spent a good amount of time at a local machine shop where I have use privileges, making and refurbing the needed parts. Now it looks like I'll be making more parts as needed for my other stuff to keep it going another 50 years. Why would I buy anything even near to new when it's a given it isn't built as well as something old, and it won't be supported long term?

Nice to know my machining skills are going to get even more polished. I may have to clear a space in the shop for some 'new tools'.

New Holland parts are the same way, had to replace the steering cylinder rod on the NH 6640. The rod was crazy expensive from the local dealers, found it a whole lot cheaper online.
