Final Adjustments on a 165 lift cover

Hi all,
I have been in the process of rebuilding some hydraulic/pto related things on my 165 and almost have the project done.
I also did the adjustments mentioned in the manual before re-installing the lift cover. Finally i am down to just 2 adjustments which are to be performed with the lift cover installed. This is where i am running into problems. My manual says to put 850 lbs on the lift arms, fill the rear end/tranny with fluid up to the inspection window, place the draft control lever between the quadrant marks, place the position control lever fully down and block the dash pot piston open. All this i have done. Next it says to start the engine and run at 500-600 rpms and then turn the adjustment screw that the control valve lever's roller rides on. It says to turn this screw in until the lift arms begin to raise, once they are horizontal back the screw out so that the lift arms stop raising. Here is where my problem is. First the manual says to put the position control lever fully down, does this mean in the down position ( far back end of the quadrant) or physically down ( low pressure- the front of the quadrant)? When i try the adjustment with the control lever the whole way back ( down position) the lift arms raise no matter where the adjustment screw is. when i try the adjustment with the control lever the whole way forward ( physically down) the lift arms will not raise at all no matter where i put the screw.
Any ideas what i might be doing wrong?

we went ahead and topped off the fluid and put the inspection plate on and ran the tractor a bit and it seems as if the controls work as they should, except that the lift arms don't fall like they should when they have no weight on them, you actually have to get off the tractor and push down on the lift arms....

any expertise would be very welcome!

OK, I think that a large part of the problem you are having is confusion between the Position Control and Pressure Control quadrants. You have not said that you have Pressure Control fitted to the tractor but from your words "far back end of the quadrant" and "low pressure - front of the quadrant" it seems that you certainly have.
For the purposes of these adjustments the Position Control lever should not be in the Pressure Control quadrant at any time.

Before going any further I would ask you to check back and ensure that all internal adjustments have been carried out accurately.
That briefly;
The inner quadrant plate was centred,
Draft control rod screw adjusted to 0.170"
Both adjustments using the dashpot wedge,feeler gauges and 3lb weights were carried out.
Quadrant stop moved as required.
Initial Pressure Control adjustment was carried out.
Lift arm end-float adjustment.

To carry out the adjustments;
The weight should be attached to the lower links only not to the top link as well.
Operate the linkage 6 times.
On Pressure Control tractors the upper knurled screw should be slackened to the end of the thread.
Fully raise the PC lever in the Position Control quadrant to allow the fitting of the dashpot wedge (UK MF 270B)
Fit a suitable gauge to the system. It may be necessary to hold the wedge in place. Draft control lever fully lowered and Position Control lever in the 'Transport' position. Screw in the lower knurled screw until the pressure control valve blows off.
Mark a line paralell to the cross-shaft axis on the hyd cover and upper lift arm. Mark 2 more lines on the cover at 1/2" and 5/8".
Screw the lower knurled screw outwards until the linkage (the line on the lift arm) takes FIVE seconds to pass between the lines at the 1/2" and 5/8" spacing. This is the drop-rate adjustment.
Stop the engine, raise the DRAFT lever and remove the wedge.
On the Pressure Control tractor;move the adjustable stop to the end of the slot under the 'Constant Pumping' marking. Move the Position Control lever into contact with the stop on the Position Control side.
Slacken the quadrant bolts and turn the inner quadrant until the 1/2" line and the line on the upper lift arm are 1/16 to 1/8" apart. Retighten quadrant bolts. This sets the maximum linkage lift height.
With the Draft lever fully 'up' and the PC lever in 'Constant Pumping'; Screw in the upper screw until the vertical lever and gauge move from side to side.
Screw out the upper screw until the lever and gauge needle remain steady and as little oil as possible comes from the diaphragm body.
Pressure Control Final Adjustment; Draft lever up. PC lever in Constant Pumping. The gauge should show around 2750psi. Confirm the exact pressure with your local MF agent as US tractors may be different to UK ones. If you need to adjust the pressure; Lower the PC lever in the Pressure Control quadrant. Reach inside to the adjusting tube and turn it clockways to increase the pressure and vice versa.
Replace the dashpot piston if removed and compress the plunger. Refit the side cover and remove the plug.
Set the Response lever 1/4" from the 'Slow ' end. Using a small wrench slacken the plunger screw until you hear the plunger 'click'. Retighten. Refit the plug and replace oil to the correct level.

Alright this looks like some helpful info.
Yes my tractor has both pressure control and position control quadrants.
I did only a few of the adjustments you mentioned, for some reason my manual didn't mention a bunch of them. But that is no surprise! my manual isn't the best.
I will print off your instructions and go back over everything and see if I can get it all to work better!
