24 Speed Transmission Questions

Our 2705 started shifting funny (driver said slow dragged out shifts) in the spring so we parked it. I pulled it into the shop and am finally getting around to checking it out now.

I checked the transmission pressures as described in the manual. Manual says port 5 at 300 psi in "low", port 4 at 300 psi in "intermediate", and port 6 at 300 psi in "high".

"Low" and "high" appear to be in spec except for both of them port 4 is also at 60 psi.

In "intermediate" all 3 gauges are at 0 psi.

Manual says "malfunction of shift valve or clutch pack is indicated".

Any body know of any ways to narrow it down a little more?

The intermediate clutch is spring applied, and oil pressure released when either lo or hi clutch is oil pressure applied. There will be no clutch pressure when in intermediate. I've never tried but the 24 speed should be able to pull or roll start since the intermediate is spring applied. What used to happen the intermediate release piston seal would fail, and when lo is applied the intermediate would not release, causing both clutches to be damaged. Sounds like that is what you have going on now with low intermediate pressure.

jogl i am in the process of rebuilding my powershift now and new clutch just ordered seal kit i believe he said kit is 158.00 hopefully friction discs are good they are around 400. each.I talked to a guy named dave at Kuhn equipment in Illinois very helpful and knowledgeable on these units if you tell him the pressures he can probably steer you in the right direction.I have about 9 hours in taking it apart so far. I have all the manuals. If kuhn equipment wasnt so far away i would just have him rebuild it. Freight would kill me.Iam going to take lots of pictures on taking it apart for reference hopefully wont have any problems. You can pressure test the units before putting them back in so you know they dont leak.I will let you know how it turns out.l

So these are the pressures I see:

port 4 5 6

L 60 300 0
Int 0 0 0
H 60 0 300

It should be this:

port 4 5 6

L 300 300 0
Int 0 0 0
H 300 0 300

Right?

Please do take lots of pictures and keep me updated. I will do the same.

What manuals do you have? All I have is the 2675 / 2705 service manual. Is there another manual on the transmission? What part of NA are you in?

Thanks guys,
JP.

P.S.: I just found an MF 24 speed trouble shooting manual and ordered it from Ebay. Any other useful info out there?

jogl i have the jensales service manuals they are
a reprint of the original service manual from what
i read they are better then the itt manual.I also
have the trouble shooting manual for the
powershift. It is helpful. When you describe the
pressures you say 4 5 6 ports my manual says high
int and low so i dont know what ports you are
reffering to.I can tell you that intermediate
should have no pressure. If you are getting the
trouble shooting manual we will be talking the
same language i.e. same ports.I have a feeling
from what you describe you have o rings out in the
clutch packs.Iam in western Oregon.

Jogl, any luck on rebuilding your 24 speed ?I have a 1980 with 7000 hrs, we rebuilt the entire engine, new turbo and clutch last winter and about 20 hrs into haying last year started loosening low and reverse, now I only have reverse and low when tractors cold, also on a possibly unrelated note in the fall when I started it up to put it away for winter I had no steering, aux hydros, high was gone etc, I only had intermediate forward. I checked pressures last season too and I was real similar to yours except 260 and 280 instead of 300 also 60 on the one port was identical to yours. I'm sure I tore up some clutches last season , I put over 100 hrs on it like this and used only intermediate as much as I could. Why am I loosing all hydraulics for the first couple minutes of start-up, fluid level was good , etc.

Haven't dug into it yet, other fires keep popping up. I'm still hoping to get to it this winter / spring. I will definitely post the day by day progress / carnage as I go once I start.
