Dust seal material for 555 brakes

Fixing the brakes on a 555. There is a rubber dust seal where the brake linkage goes through the housing cover assembly. The old seals are all rotten and in pieces. I'm afraid I'm going to have to make some new ones the old stuff is just sheet rubber and is a hair thicker than 1/8". Looked all over Canadian Tire ,Home Depot etc. looking for something that would work with no luck. Was wondering if some of you's have had the same predicament and what you wound up using for material. Tried obtaining them through Agco. No luck there either.

Hey Brendon I'm thinking that inner tube material would be too thin. The way everything is put together it looks like these seals may slide around inside a retainer as the brakes are applied. If this is the case then the material thickness will be pretty important. Too thin and it will just scrunch up. Too thick and it won't slide.

If the 555 is anything like a 33 or 44 (I have never been exposed to the "triple" series, and have been around a 55 a little, but never paid much attention to the brake area) I have a faint idea what you are talking about.

On my 33, where the actuating lever goes through the brake housing plate it had what was probably rubber at one time, in a sort of crescent moon shape with a slot that fit over the lever.. What I did was cut it out of a piece of truck mud flap. I had a hard plastic one that was black in color, and was about the right thickness. Probably don't seal as well as the original rubber piece did, but the tractor is just used to take a "putt" now and then, pull a hayride wagon, and pull a hayrake for about 6 hours over a summer (averages 15-20 hours a year).

If you can't find any and you think this idea would work, I still have the flap and could cut a piece and send it to you.

Hope this helps,
Brad

That's the things I made for my 33.

When I made mine 5-6 years ago or so I couldn't find them on ebay, and at that time Kessel's were not offering them either.. Maybe they are now.
