my 1st MF a 230 diesel the 3pt hitch only go s up when I let the clutch out step on the clutch and no lift is that the way they work or am I doing something wrong lifts like my old ford 8n tractor,, there are only the 2 levers on the side one for draft and one for position thanks cdv

I think you need an owner's manual, go online and eBay ought to have them. This site might even have them. I don't know your answer, sorry.

Since the hydraulic pump is in the transmission the clutch needs to be engaged, on the 8N it's run off the engine. You only use the draft control for ground engaging equipment like a plow. If you are using a bush hog, etc you put the draft control lever all the way up, and use just the position control for the 3 point.

Yes, the clutch disengages the hydraulic pump (and pto), but it probably needs to be adjusted. It's SUPPOSED to be a two step process because there are actually 2 clutches on the flywheel. Partially depressing the clutch peddle should disengage the transmission to stop tractor travel, and fully depressing the clutch then disengages the pto and hydraulics. Not as ideal as "live", but the most practical solution the engineers of the day could come up with.

There should be a couple inches of travel between the first and second stages. The service manual would give the exact process to adjust it right.
