I have a 2002 481. Wondering if someone can tell if the alternator on this tractor should be charging the minute it starts. This one doesn't start charging until you rev it up to certain rpm. Is this normal for this to do. Plus the tach doesn't work until you rev it up and still doesn't work properly. How can I tell if it's the tach or alternator. Thanks
 
I been waiting for someont to answer you, so far nobody does. I can't tell you exactly for your model alternator, but on my Farmall / Delco 10SI alternator, I had the same exact thing. I think it might have been something internal to the alternator, not sure. Anyway, I got a diode kit from Charlie Uthke, Charlie's Repair, 22195 State Hwy 56, Austin, MN 55912 [email protected].
Very economical.
Insntalled in the top of the alternator, fixed perfectly. It charges up immediately, tapers off, runs perfectly. Very economical. Might not work for you, but contact Charlie, it nmight.
 
Might not hurt to take it to, or call a trustworthy shop that repairs alternators, starters, etc, and see what they think. If it has no problem keeping the battery charged may not be worth worrying about unless it quits charging.
 
I did. He said it was ok. So far it's keeping battery charged.
The tach is what aggrevates me by not working properly.
 
we have a431 if the fan belt gets a little slack will do that tack is one wire that goes to one leg of the field on of these alt just changed ours to a 10s delco and had to put the tack lead in very easy convert
