Since it has gotten colder here in upstate NY I have to beat on the starter with a hammer to get it to go, never had a problem in warm weather....does this starter need to be oiled ..there are 4 large phillips head screws in it...do I need to to take them off to add machine oil or what??

Might try turning the solenoid top bat post bolt 1/2 turn as the head may be worn away. Disconnect the bat, remove all the wires and cable from the bolt, loosten the rear nut, push the bolt in and turn 1/2 turn and reassemble all removed wires and cable. If it does not help the starter may need brushes. Worth a try, I've fixed several this way.
