Im replacing the cam timing and crank gears on my 202 (Z134). The cam gear stripped 4-5 teeth and was not turning. The manual refers to the timing marks being lined up but is it that simple? No TDC on cyl #1? Possible to be 180 off? Nothing else to watch for timing the cam/crank?? Thanks Cliff

Since there's no chain and the gear meshes with the crank gear I think the marks lining up is all except checking the little oil hole in the cam for blockage in order for the govenor to work properly.Been awhile since I had one apart.

Gear marks are all you need to get lined up. Check the block timing cover gasket area to see what the gear stamp is, S for standard, O means oversized, U means undersized gears are needed. May be from + or - .001 to .006 is not standard. Loose gears rattle, tight gears whine.

Since this is a Continental, and you are missing teeth on both gears?? When you get your new gears, you will see timing marks on them. One zero on one, 2 zeros on the other. Place the one betwix the two and bob's yer uncle, can't mess it up because of the keyways, you'll see what I mean when the new parts arrive .... if this was a Standard, or any other UK engine... there'd be a lot more to it.

Thanks for the replies Some history: Ive owned this 202 for many years as a shop tractor. A few years back I determined the gov was not working and hired a local reputable ag mech to replace said gov.He said the gov was in pcs and had to find the balls in the pan. Gov replaced and all was well for while until some serious knocking and lugging down developed while I was boxblading my shop lot at slow speed. Before I could push in the clutch and shut off the engine, there was a very loud bang which afterwards the engine ran fine as if nothing had happened except I had lost my power steering. This all happened in seconds. Thinking my powersteering pump had seized , I removed and disassembled it to find the shaft broken but everything oiled ,clean, loose, with no debri or galling. ?? I purchased and installed a new pump. Upon firing up ,within 10 seconds the lugging down and knocking returned and I was able to shut down quickly. I knew I needed to take a look inside the timing cover which leads me to where I am now. I suspect the timing gears may have suffered some damage when the gov failed initially but said mech said nothing and didn't replace gears as they did run for some time. Cam gear is now missing teeth and crank gear chewed up. I cranked the engine over with key off to raise the loader for moving it and ease of working on it. I had removed the power steering pump and then I could see the cam gear not turning. I ordered gears from Yesteryears but did not see any options on OS,S or US gear sets. As the cam hadn't been turning was my concern about timing. Also the gear ratio is not 1:1 so I thought I needed to catch the right rotation of crank/cam timing. Big job to take this all apart and don't want to screw it up. PS Im a farm boy with good mechanic backround. Thanks Cliff

March 12,2014, 10:59pm- Jeremy in Delaware posted pictures of his timing gears, and you can see one of the timing marks, just the shadow of the punch mark, on one gear tooth. See if you find anything like that left on yours, even if they are shot anyway, but you'll see what I mean..
Search the 'archives' here for??? timing gears? And just open them, that's how I found Jeremy's pictures while eating lunch..

And I bet you are right, the power steering break is what also happened under the timing cover, it started to strip the gear teeth- but who knew at the time huh?
